About Us

The Volunteer stands in Victoria street close to the Long Stay car park in Dudley Street. Formerly a Burts Brewery public house it is now a Freehouse and is a regular within the pages of The Good Pub Guide.

While the pub does not currently serve food (Graham and Sue are in semi-retirement mode), it has a strong reputation locally as a drinker’s pub. With an age limit of 14 years minimum age, it offers adults a child-free atmosphere that is very popular with its clientele.

Known for its unusual decor, hinting back to a quieter, more contented age. Walking through the door, it seems as if you have stepped back in time. Offering customers a very unique experience and drawing visitors from far and wide.

There is a Special Welcome here, it is Unique. It is a meeting place for like-minded people who can share intimate conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.



Highly original

I can’t think of another pub even vaguely like it, if I could, I’d go there too. It is rather like stepping back in time and that’s no bad thing. Just love the atmosphere here.



Unique and delightful!

My wife and I are regulars at The ‘Volly’ and have been since moving from the Mainland. We have visited most of the pubs in Ventnor at some point until finding the place.

It is one of those rare places that manages to offer something very different and despite being just a little tucked away is clearly popular with local residents.

I suppose that the decor has much to do with the character of The Volly, it is unashamedly different in a world full of homoginised, plastic, ‘Theme Pubs’.

We love it!

Sorry to see you go

We can only hope that the new landlord won’t change the format too much. This is an iconic pub that draws people from far afield because it is so very different. Unsurprised you are calling time Graham & Sue, everyone needs to retire sometime.



Please don't change

The pub is special to me because there is a bond between locals and staff. I like the respect everyone has for each other and for the staff that keep the pub such a comfortable and welcoming space with a great atmosphere.



A regular since 1969

This was jointly my favorite with the sadly ‘late’ Walmer Castle. Throughout The Volly has been almost consistantly well-kept and a friendly place to socialise.

I was a policeman and had to ensure that licensed premises were run resposibly, which these (and The Mill Bay) were.

The present owners have a strong following, and have had throughout their IoW landlording over many years. Whoever takes over are ensured a friendly welcome and a happy future at the ‘helm’.
